Just when you thought modern day fashion couldn’t get any uglier, earlier this week a pair of high heel Crocs went viral. Although people quickly took to social media to mock the sensible shoe, ultimately it was Crocs who had the last laugh: Subsequently, the style sold out, and the company got a ton of press.
Now, just days later, an even fancier version of the rubber shoe has surfaced. French fashion house Balenciaga, who has become known for trolling the fashion industry, has revealed its spin with a surprisingly-cute Crocs-inspired stiletto.
In a series of Instagram posts, the French fashion house gives us a sneak peek at the hot pink stiletto embellished with charms and brooches. The first photo shared, on June 29, is a styled shot in which its hard to register that the shoe is made of rubber. But in a photo posted three days ago — strategic timing — the design cannot be denied.
Of course, this isn’t the first time Balenciaga’s design head Demna Gvasalia has collaborated with Crocs. Known for his disruptive style, in October 2017, he debuted a pair of platform crocs at the Spring 2018 show in Paris. “To me these kind of techniques and working with these kind of materials is very Balenciaga,” he said at the time. At prices that ranged from $495 to $850, the platforms sold out before they were even released.
“Ugly products have become so ironic that they’re now trendy, thanks to designer brands launching their own ugly clothing items,” writes Business Insider’s Mary Hanbury. “It’s an excellent marketing ploy — these unappealing products with large price tags create a backlash and subsequent buzz on social media.”
As for now, it’s unclear when (or if) the Balenciaga/Croc stilettos will be available for purchase, but in the meantime, we’ll be looking for them on all of our favorite fashion influencers. Because, yea, Crocs are cool now. Isn’t it ironic?
