Women Are Using Electric Toothbrushes As Vibrators — Here’s Why That’s So Unsafe
Vibrators are a godsend for any woman who has difficulty reaching orgasm — or anyone who wants a little extra excitement to the bedroom, for that matter. But lately, online forums have been revealing that some women are using unconventional electronics as sex toys. One in particular doctors are cautioning against: using electric toothbrushes as vibrators.
According to reports from The Sun, women on the internet are sharing their experiences using electric toothbrushes — both the brush end and the handle — to pleasure themselves. Let’s start with the obvious: There’s clearly a lot of potential issues here, safety being one of the most glaring. Then, of course, there’s hygiene.
Mary Jane Minkin, MD, clinical professor in the department of obstetrics, gynecology, and reproductive sciences at the Yale University School of Medicine, tells Health that using the brush end “would be fairly irritating and potentially traumatic, due to the risk of scratching the delicate vaginal and vulvar tissue.”
Going out on a limb here but if you can afford electric toothbrush you can afford a vibrator.(And don’t forget to floss)
Aside from potential irritation or damage, Dr. Minkin also warns that those with an STI like herpes or chlamydia could risk transferring the infection to their mouth (if they continue to use the toothbrush as intended). There’s the general ick-factor in doing this, too.
Sadly, this isn’t the first time women have put themselves at risk with household remedies. Earlier this year, a nurse tweeted that she’d seen multiple patients who attempted to cut their periods short by taking a vacuum to their vaginas. Not only is this wildly unsafe, but it also doesn’t work; the suction of the vacuum prompts the body to produce even more blood, rendering this method totally useless (and potentially really dangerous).
Basically, please be kind to your lady parts! There are plenty of sex toys on the market to suit whatever your needs may be; there’s no need to go searching around the house for substitutes. Not sure where to start? Check out our guide to the best sex toys for women.
