Selena Gomez Says Being Body Shamed On Social Media ‘Really Messed Me Up’

Selena Gomez has been baring her soul to fans, sharing everything from her health struggles to the issues in her past relationship. Now, the “Lose You To Love Me” singer is opening up about how the body shaming she experienced on social media affected her self-esteem during a stressful time in her life.

On an episode of Raquelle Stevens’s video podcast, Giving Back Generation, Gomez talked about the negative comments she read about her body online. “I experienced [body-shaming] with my weight fluctuation for the first time,” she said. “I have lupus and deal with kidney issues and high blood pressure, so I deal with a lot of health issues, and for me that’s when I really started noticing more of the body image stuff.”

Gomez went onto explain how her health issues and the medication she takes for them causes her weight to fluctuate. “It’s the medication I have to take for the rest of my life — it depends on even the month, to be honest,” she said. “In reality, that’s just my truth. I fluctuate. It depends what’s happening in my life.”

Gomez then told the host that being body-shamed during an already stressful period in her life “got to me big time” and that it “really messed me up for a bit.”

Me, all the time

In September 2017, the singer announced that she had undergone a kidney transplant due to complications from lupus. In October 2018, she checked into East Coast psychiatric facility after becoming “despondent and emotional” over a low white blood cell count.

Now, Gomez is “very happy with living my life” and will lean less on social media. “I will do a red carpet, I will do whatever; I don’t need to see it; I participated; I felt wonderful and that’s where the extent of it is. I don’t care to expose myself to everyone and hear what they have to say,” she said.

The biggest lesson she’s learned through all of the ups and downs, she told the host, is to forgive and have compassion for people.

“Thank you all for standing by my side through the highs and lows. I couldn’t do it without you all and I can’t wait to start my next adventure with you,” Gomez recently wrote to fans on Instagram.
