Bella Hadid Shares A Personal Message About Her Mental Health Struggles
Social media can make it seem like stars live the perfect life, but supermodel Bella Hadid is setting the record straight. On Friday, she took to Instagram to thank her followers for their kind birthday messages while sharing an important message in honor of World Mental Health Day.
Hadid shared an inspiring quote from mental health writer Hannah Blum. In the accompanying caption, she reflected on her recent birthday on October 9: “I wanted to say thank you so much for all the birthday wishes. You have no idea how much it means to me reading each message…grateful and proud of myself to be in the place that I am today, going into my 23rd year of life.”
Hadid continued by acknowledging that World Mental Health Day had just passed, and took the opportunity to shed light on the impact social media has on mental health. “With that being said, I would like to add that everything you see online or through social media is not always what it seems,” she wrote. “The happiness we create online while being sad in real life makes no sense, but sometimes it just seems easier to live within your sadness rather than talk about it.”
Hadid hinted that she’s been through bouts of depression, while urging her followers to take care of themselves. “Don’t feel pressured by things online,” she wrote. “If you don’t want to get out of bed, don’t. If you want to cancel plans, cancel them. Being kind and protective to yourself and your energy is something I’ve learned to be helpful. When the world feels like it is collapsing around you, you are allowed to ask for help… you do not have to deal w/ your mental state alone.”
The post ended with an uplifting message to Bella Hadid’s followers. “If you are reading this and feel like there’s no light at the end of the tunnel… there is … and I see you!” she said. “You are strong, you are good enough and you DESERVE to be happy!! I am going to write a new morning mantra right now and you should too! I love all of you out there so much! Sending a big virtual hug.”
Last year, Hadid opened up about her mental health struggles, specifically her experience with anxiety and panic attacks, on her mother Yolanda’s Lifetime series, Making a Model. She revealed that being in the spotlight sometimes left her “shaking and crying,” and she even said that being on the runway cased her to black out. “I would come out and be like, ‘Oh well, I guess it’s over,’” she shared with her mother.
