Wedding planning often goes hand-in-hand with a little family drama and even Prince Harry and Meghan Markle aren’t immune to the woes of the process, which can often include unexpected last-minute changes–and that’s exactly what happened in Markle’s case, when it was revealed that her father, Thomas Markle, was unable to make the trip across the pond to give his daughter’s hand away in marriage. Markle confirmed the news in an official statement released by Kensington Palace on May 17 on her behalf which read, “Sadly, my father will not be attending our wedding. I have always cared for my father and hope he can be given the space he needs to focus on his health.”

Although it was previously reported that the actress wanted her mother to take the walk down the aisle with her, Kensington Palace revealed that the honor would go to Prince Harry’s father, Prince Charles. Not only would he accompany his son’s bride, but Markle was the one who asked Prince Charles to take on the important role.

“Ms. Meghan Markle has asked His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales to accompany her down the aisle of the Quire of St George’s Chapel on her Wedding Day,” the statement said. “The Prince of Wales is pleased to be able to welcome Ms. Markle to The Royal Family in this way.”

Markle will begin the procession into St. George’s Chapel on her own, followed by her wedding party, (which includes Prince George and Princess Charlotte). Once she reaches the Quire section of the chapel, (the final portion), Prince Charles will accompany her the remainder of the walk. Markle originally planned on the same choreography and solo entrance, however, her father was originally supposed to meet her for the final steps down the aisle.

The world will be watching on May 19 as the couple exchanges their vows–and we can’t wait to see Markle’s grand entrance for her big day.
