Not Sure WTF To Wear This Winter? Start With These 10 Trends
While we’re not exactly psyched about the icy days around the corner, there’s one part of winter that we’re actually excited for: the cozy-chic fashion. The colder temps provide a unique opportunity to experiment with layering different patterns, colors, and textures without becoming soaked in sweat. And, contrary to popular belief, you can stay warm while still looking stylish.
But entering a new season doesn’t mean you need to buy an entirely new wardrobe. Adding a few trend-forward pieces will easily elevate your cold-weather wardrobe staples. In need of some more styling guidance for the months ahead? We asked fashion experts to share their best trend predictions for winter, plus some shopping picks to give them a go IRL.
Sure, summer may have midi dresses and sandals…but winter has teeny bags paired with oversized coats! Check out the top winter fashion trends for 2020 below.
Crystal Cave, CEO and Founder of Crystal Cave Style and Founder and Creative Director of Poppy Row, predicts a triumphant comeback for good ol’ pleated pants. They’re the perfect work-appropriate trouser to pair with your favorite sweaters and blouses but you can dress them down with t-shirts on weekends, too.
Vegan leather (aka “pleather”) has evolved from the plasticky stuff of the past. Nowadays, there are tons of options on the market that feel like the real deal but are cheaper and more ethical. And when it comes to winter trends, it’s all about color. “Classic black leather will always hold a place in our hearts but this season, jewel tones have taken over,” says Brittany Diego, Los Angeles-based celebrity stylist. “Brighten up dreary winter days with a pop of color-emerald green, ruby red, and sapphire blue.”
This season, make Cher Horowitz proud by wearing your boldest plaid print coats. “If you don’t already have a plaid coat in your wardrobe, it’s time to add one to your rotation,” says Diego. “It instantly adds a flair of sophistication to any outfit, and rings back to Olivia Pope’s style: a win-win.”
For an easy, party-ready look, Cave recommends an elegant velvet slip dress. It’s a great way to play on the classic silk slip dresses we loved during the summer, while still being seasonally appropriate.
This primal pattern has had its moment throughout 2019, and it seems to be following us into the new year. “You certainly don’t need a head-to-toe snakeskin look to take part in this trend,” says Diego. A snakeskin ankle boot or thigh-high can do just the trick to upgrade your winter apparel.
When it comes to winter fashion accessories, micro bags are still making a major statement. Though the aren’t quite as tiny as Lizzo’s infamous Valentino bag, purses are particularly petite this season.
Pearl-embellished clips, hairbands, and barrettes dominated the crowns of our heads this summer, and it seems like this elegant hair trend isn’t going anywhere for this season. It’s the easiest way to make any simple sweater-jean combination stand out.
