Anne Hathaway Clarifies Her Decision To Stop Drinking Alcohol

Anne Hathaway recently made headlines for revealing that she has given up alcohol for her three-year-old son, Jonathan. Surprised by how much attention her decision received, the 36-year-old actress is clarifying her choice to go dry.

In the cover story for the current issue of Modern Luxury, Hathaway sets the record straight on any speculation that she might have a substance abuse problem. Her decision to abstain from alcohol, she explained, was based off of the way she felt in the days after drinking, while trying to do normal activities with her son. It was never an issue of substance abuse.

“I didn’t put [a drink] down because my drinking was a problem; I put it down because the way I drink leads me to have hangovers and those were the problem,” she said. “My last hangover lasted for five days. When I’m at a stage in my life where there is enough space for me to have a hangover, I’ll start drinking again, but that won’t be until my kid is out of the house.”

Earlier this year, Hathaway opened up to Ellen DeGeneres about her decision not to drink for the next 18 years, admitting that she couldn’t handle hangovers while taking care of her son. “He’s getting to an age where he really does need me all the time in the mornings,” she told the talk show host.

The award-winning actress also made it abundantly clear that she is not trying to take any sort of “moralistic stance” and doesn’t look down on mothers who choose to drink. It’s simply the right choice for her at the moment.

“I don’t think drinking is bad,” she told the magazine. “It’s just the way I do it — which I personally think is really fun and awesome — is just not the kind of fun and awesome that goes with having a child for me. But this isn’t a moralistic stance.”

She concluded: “I just want to make this clear: Most people don’t have to do such an extreme thing.”

Hopefully, Hathaway’s clarification inspires women to do what feels right for them and to stop judging other mothers for the choices they make.
